What It Feels Like to Watch

Yellowjackets is Lost meets Lord of the Flies with teenage girls. A high school soccer team's plane crashes in the Ontario wilderness in 1996. They survive for nineteen months. What happened out there? The show moves between two timelines: 1996 (the crash, the survival, the descent into something dark) and 2021 (the survivors as adults, traumatized, keeping secrets). The show's thesis: trauma never dies. It just waits.

The adult survivors are: Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), a housewife having an affair; Taissa (Tawny Cypress), apolitician running for office; Natalie (Juliette Lewis), an addict in and out of rehab; and Misty (Christina Ricci), a nursing home worker who might be the most dangerous of all. They're being blackmailed. Someone knows what they did. The wilderness never let them go. "It gets easier," young Natalie says. "You just get used to it being hard."

The 1996 timeline is survival horror: rationing food, building shelter, the slow erosion of civilization. The teamcaptain dies. The assistant coach survives but is badly burned. The girls form alliances, betray each other, and gradually accept that rescue isn't coming. The show hints at supernatural elements—the wilderness may be alive, hungry, demanding sacrifice. The girls hunt, they scavenge, and eventually, they become what they eat. The cannibalismis confirmed. The ritual isjust beginning.

Two seasons (as of 2024), nineteen episodes, ongoing. Yellowjackets is feminist horror: girls becoming monsters not because they're evil, but because the world made them that way. The wilderness strips away civilization, and what's underneath is survival instinct, tribal loyalty, and violence. "We're all just animals," Shauna realizes. They are. The show's question: what does survival cost? The answer: everything. And the wilderness is still hungry.
