What It Feels Like to Watch

The Sinner is an anthology series where each season asks the same question in different forms: why did this ordinary person commit this violent act? Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) returns each season to investigate crimes where the perpetrator is already known—we saw them do it—but the motive is buried somewhere in trauma, memory, and the unspeakable.

Season one is the breakout: Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel), a young mother on a beach vacation, suddenly stabs a stranger to death in front of her family. She doesn't know why. She doesn't deny it. She can't explain it. The show is about excavating Cora's past—her religious upbringing, her sick sister, her mother's abuse—to find the buried trauma that made murder possible.

Bill Pullman's Harry Ambrose is the through-line: a detective with his own demons, drawn to cases where the standard explanations don't apply. He's awkward, brilliant, struggling with his sexuality and his past. Each season introduces a new perpetrator and a new mystery, but Harry anchors the show with his damaged persistence.

The structure is brilliant. Instead of "who did it," it's "why did they do it." The crime happens in the first episode; the investigation is psychological archaeology. Each season uncovers childhood trauma, religious extremism, cults, family secrets. The perpetrators are always sympathetic, always broken, always more than their crime.

Jessica Biel's performance in season one is Emmy-worthy. The show continued for four seasons, each with diminishing returns, but the first season remains one of television's great psychological thrillers.
