What It Feels Like to Watch

The OA is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery wrapped in a metaphysical inquiry. Prairie Johnson (Brit Marling) returns home after disappearing for seven years. She was blind when she vanished; now she can see. She refuses to tell her parents what happened. Instead, she gathers a small group of locals—a high school teacher, a troubled teenager, a transgender boy, a drug dealer, a bully—and tells them her story.

What follows is a narrative within a narrative: Prairie's account of being held captive by a scientist studying near-death experiences, along with four other prisoners. They died and came back, each time bringing something from the other side. Together, they learned a system of movements—dance-like gestures—that could open portals between dimensions.

Is Prairie telling the truth? Is she mentally ill? Is she running a con? The show refuses to answer definitively. Each interpretation is supported by evidence, and each interpretation undermines the others. The first season builds to a school shooting that the group attempts to prevent using the movements—then ends on a shot that could be proof of interdimensional travel or proof of Prairie's delusion.

Season two expands the scope: San Francisco, a rose window, a game of clue-hunting that leads to another dimension. The production design is dreamlike. The story is genuinely unpredictable. Brit Marling co-created, co-wrote, and stars, and her vision is singular—nothing else on television looks or feels like this.

Cancelled after two seasons, The OA is incomplete but essential. The journey is the point. The questions matter more than the answers.
