What It Feels Like to Watch

The Haunting of Bly Manor is Mike Flanagan's follow-up to Hill House, and it's a different kind of ghost story. Where Hill House was about family trauma, Bly Manor is about love—love that persists beyond death, love that traps, love that liberates. It's a Gothic romance disguised as a horror series, and the ghosts are secondary to what the living carry.

Dani (Victoria Pedretti) is an American au pair hired to care for two orphans at Bly Manor in 1980s England. The children, Miles and Flora, are strange but sweet. The housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, seems kind. The cook, Owen, is gentle. But there's also Hannah, the housekeeper who seems confused about time. And the lady in the lake who walks the grounds at night. And the man who appears in mirrors. And the doll that moves when no one's watching.

The show's central philosophy is that ghosts are memories. They repeat their trauma endlessly, unable to move on. The Lady in the Lake drowned in her grief. The man in the mirrors hung himself in shame. They don't haunt—they're stuck. Bly Manor isn't a place of evil; it's a place of trapping, where people who can't let go of the past become part of it forever.

The show's most remarkable episode, "The Altar of the Father," tells the origin story of the Lady in the Lake as a tragic romance in another century. It's a ghost story within a ghost story, and it shows Flanagan's commitment to making his ghosts sympathetic victims rather than simple monsters.

Dani's story becomes a love story with Jamie (Amelia Eve), the gardener, and their relationship gives the horror an emotional stake that jumps and scares can't provide. By the end, you're not scared of the ghosts—you're crying for them.
