"Standing Alone"
The Good Wife begins with a premise that could have been generic: politician's wife stands by her husband at a press conference where he admits to soliciting prostitutes. Then she gets a job. But Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) is not standing by anyone—she's surviving. Her husband Peter (Chris Noth) goes to prison, and Alicia returns to the law career she abandoned for marriage and motherhood.
The show is a legal procedural with serialized character drama and political thriller elements woven through its DNA. Each week brings a case; each season brings a campaign, a scandal, a betrayal. The firm where Alicia works—Stern, Lockhart & Gardner—becomes a character, with partners jockeying for power, associates competing for partnership, and money always threatening to run out.
Julianna Margulies carries the show with a performance of controlled fire. Alicia is quiet, competent, and furious—furious at her husband, at the hypocrisy of politics, at the men who underestimate her. Her relationship with Will Gardner (Josh Charles), her law school classmate and current boss, is the show's romantic tension—fraught, inevitable, complicated.
Christine Baranski as Diane Lockhart and Archie Panjabi as Kalinda Sharma create iconic characters: Diane, the liberal feminist partner who becomes Alicia's mentor; Kalinda, the bisexual investigator with leather jackets and a mysterious past. Alan Cumming arrives as Eli Gold, a political consultant who steals every scene.
The show ran seven seasons, maintaining quality longer than most network dramas. It spun off The Good Fight, which continued the story without Alicia. The legal cases are clever, the politics feel real, and Alicia's journey from betrayed wife to independent woman never loses its emotional core.
