"The Hunter and the Hunted"
The Fall is a cat-and-mouse thriller that dares to make the mouse sympathetic. Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) is a bereavement counselor by day, serial killer by night—a meticulous predator who stalks professional women in Belfast. Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) is the Metropolitan Police detective brought in to review a murder investigation who realizes she's hunting a serial killer.
Gillian Anderson is magnetic—cool, controlled, sexual without apology, professional without warmth. Stella Gibson doesn't play the game; she ignores it entirely. Her interrogation of a male detective who's been sleeping with a junior officer is a masterclass in wielding power without raising your voice. "He was asking for it," the detective says. "He was wearing a uniform," Stella replies, flipping every assumption.
Jamie Dornan is equally compelling as Paul Spector—charming with his wife and children, tender with his bereavement clients, methodical with his victims. The show refuses to make him a monster; his ordinariness is the horror. He could be your neighbor, your coworker, the father at school pickup who seems so devoted to his kids.
The show's flaw is its endless middle. Season two stretches the pursuit without enough forward motion. Season three delivers resolution but at a cost to momentum. The first season is perfect—a tense, atmospheric portrait of two professionals circling each other. The later seasons can't sustain that tension.
Belfast is a character—cold, gray, beautiful, haunted. The show's aesthetic is Nordic noir by way of Northern Ireland, all shadows and rain and moral complexity.
