"MI5's Rejects"
Slow Horses is British spy fiction with a hangover. Slough House is where MI5 sends agents who've failed—spectacularly, embarrassingly, or just inconveniently. They're the "slow horses," maintained on the payroll but kept far from real intelligence work. They file reports, do busywork, and hope for a chance to prove themselves. They're led by Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), a brilliant operative who's let himself become a grotesque—fat, flatulent, alcoholic, deliberately repulsive.
River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) is the hotshot who made a training error that nearly killed civilians. Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) might be an undercover agentMonitoring the house. Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) is the administrator with a drinking problem she's managed. Every slow horse has a story, and half the drama is discovering why each one ended up in purgatory.
Then there's a real case. A kidnapping, a threat, a conspiracy. Regent's Park—MI5's headquarters, led by Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas)—wants to handle it cleanly. The slow horses stumble into it, or are used as assets, and suddenly Jackson Lamb is being Jackson Lamb: brilliant, vicious, loyal to his rejects and absolutely lethal to anyone who threatens them.
Gary Oldman is extraordinary—a performance of controlled chaos, hiding intellect behind slovenly manners. The supporting cast matches him. The tone balances bleak British humor with genuine thriller tension. This isn't Bond; it's the office park where Bond's messes get cleaned up, by the people who made their own messes.
Based on Mick Herron's novels, each season adapts one book. They're standalone stories with continuing character arcs—perfect for the limited-series model Apple TV+ favors.
