What It Feels Like to Watch

Peaky Blinders is a British gangster epic set in Birmingham after World War I. Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) is the leader of the Peaky Blinders—a gang named for the razor blades sewn into their flat caps. He's handsome, brilliant, and dead inside. The war broke him. Now he wants power, money, and something he can't name. "By order of the Peaky Blinders," he says, and men die.

The show is style as substance: slow-motion walks, cigarette smoke, tailored suits, horses, jazz, and Nick Cave on the soundtrack. Birmingham is industrial, gray, brutal. The Shelbys—Arthur (Paul Anderson), the violent older brother; Ada (Sophie Rundle), the sister who wants out; Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory), the matriarch who holds them together—rise from bookmakers to legitimate businessmen to international arms dealers. Their enemies: cops (Sam Neill), Italian mobsters, rival gangs, fascists (Sam Claflin), and eventually the mob bosses of Boston.

Cillian Murphy is mesmerizing: Thomas Shelby's thousand-yard stare, his whisper-quiet threats, his brutal, efficient violence. He's a war hero who can't feel, a gangster who wants to be legitimate, a man building an empire but eating himself alive. The show's thesis: trauma destroys, and success doesn't heal. Thomas gets richer and emptier. "I'm not a good man," he says. "I'm a businessman." He's both. Neither.

Six seasons, thirty-six episodes, complete. Peaky Blinders became a phenomenon—the haircuts, the fashion, the aesthetic. Beneath the style is a story about class, trauma, and the corruption of power. Tommy Shelby wanted to lift his family out of poverty. He succeeded. He also destroyed them. "There's no rest for me in this world," he says. "Perhaps in the next." The show ends with him alive—but alone, staring at a field of horses, finally at peace. Perhaps.
