What It Feels Like to Watch

Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) is Spanish heist thriller as opera. A mysterious man called The Professor (Álvaro Morte) assembles a team of criminals to rob the Royal Mint of Spain—printing billions of euros over eleven days, holding hostages, negotiating with police, becoming folk heroes. The team uses city names as aliases: Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó), Berlin (Pedro Alonso), Nairobi (Alba Flores), Rio (Miguel Herrán), Denver (Jaime Lorente), Helsinki and Oslo. "We're not thieves," The Professor says. "We're protesters."

The show's structure is cat-and-mouse: The Professor versus Inspector Raquel Murillo (Itziar Ituño), a police negotiator who becomes his obsession and his love. Inside the Mint, tensions rise: hostages who sympathize with captors, captors who fall for hostages, a psychopath (Berlin) who makes things harder, a genius (Nairobi) who manages the money. Outside, The Professor anticipates every police move—until he doesn't. The show's thesis: the system is broken, and robbery is resistance. "The resistance" becomes the robbers' brand; their red jumpsuits and Dalí masks become symbols across Spain and the world.

Season two (Parts 3 and 4 in Netflix's numbering) escalate: the Bank of Spain heist, higher stakes, personal losses. Tokyo narrates, and her voiceover is both annoying and essential—she's the chaotic element that keeps everything unpredictable. The show is melodrama: romance, betrayal, tragic deaths, impossible escapes. "Bella Ciao," the Italian resistance song, becomes the show's anthem—sung at funerals, during escapes, as act of defiance. "It's the song of people who have nothing left to lose."

Two heists, five parts (Netflix split seasons), forty-eight episodes, complete. Money Heist became a global phenomenon—Netflix's most-watched non-English series. The masks appeared in real protests worldwide. The criticism: it's unrealistic, melodramatic, dependent on characters making stupid choices. The counter: it's not about realism; it's about emotion, tension, the fantasy of outsmarting power. "We're not trying to change the world," Tokyo says. "We're trying to survive it."
