What It Feels Like to Watch

Lupin is a heist thriller built on charm. Omar Sy plays Assane Diop, a Senagalese immigrant in Paris who models himself after Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief from Maurice Leblanc's novels. When his father is framed for theft by his wealthy employer and dies in prison, Assane spends decades planning revenge against the Pellegrini family—the father who accused him, the daughter he grew up with, the wealth that destroyed everything.

The show's pleasure is watching Assane work. He's a master of disguise, misdirection, and social engineering. He doesn't use guns or violence—he uses people's assumptions against them. He walks into museums, auctions, prisons, police stations, and walks out with what he wants. Omar Sy is magnetic: warm, playful, dangerous, grieving. You root for him even when he's manipulating everyone around him.

The structure is clever—each episode reveals more of Assane's plan while following the police detective (Ludivine Sagnier) trying to catch him and the Pellegrini family realizing they're being targeted. The flashbacks to young Assane and his father give emotional weight to every con. This isn't just about money. It's about justice for a man who never got any.

Paris is gorgeous—the Louvre, the streets, the apartments. The show uses the city as beautiful heist films always have: architecture as playground, wealth as target, the working-class hero outsmarting the rich. Part one ends on a cliffhanger that made global audiences furious in the best way. Part two delivers resolution. Part three expands the world.

This is entertainment without apology—slick, fun, emotionally grounded. It made Omar Sy an international star and proved that subtitled content could dominate global streaming.
