"Anti-Corruption"
Line of Duty is the best British police procedural you probably haven't seen. AC-12 is the Anti-Corruption unit—an internal affairs department tasked with investigating bent coppers. Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) leads the unit with moral absolutes and Northern Irish phrasing that became iconic. "Mother of God" and "Now we're getting to the truth" are his weapons.
Each season focuses on a different target. Season one: DCI Tony Gates (Lennie James), whose affair with a woman tied to organized crime compromises his career. Season two: DI Lindsay Denton (Keeley Hawes), the sole survivor of an ambush that killed police escorting a protected witness. Season three: Sergeant Danny Waldron (Daniel Mays), an armed response officer whose team covers up a shooting. Seasons four and five continue escalating, with Thandiwe Newton and Stephen Graham as targets.
The interrogation scenes are legendary—tense, detailed, cat-and-mouse dialogues where professional behavior comes under microscopic scrutiny. Hastings demands precision: "When I say I want exact answers, I don't want to hear you thought you saw something. I want to hear what you saw." AC-12 probes police work for lies, inconsistencies, and cover-ups.
The "H" conspiracy—an organized crime group embedded within the police—runs through the series, building to reveals that surprised everyone. Jed Mercurio isn't afraid to kill major characters, subvert expectations, or make the audience doubt everyone.
This is British television at its best: tightly plotted, morally complex, performed with restraint and rage. The finale divided viewers, but the journey was sensational.
Narrative Drive (9): Every season builds to interrogations that are more exciting than any car chase. The momentum never flags.
Characters & Acting (9): Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compston, and Vicky McClure form a perfect team. Guest stars consistently deliver career-best work.
Resolution (7): The H reveal was divisive. Whether satisfying or not, it was bold.
"The Ambush" (S2E1) — The convoy attack. The lone survivor. The investigation begins.
"The Caddy" (S3E6) — Season three finale. The revelation. Dot's confession.
"The Bloody Cards" (S6E7) — Series finale. H revealed. The final interrogation.
