What It Feels Like to Watch

Justified is a modern Western that understands exactly what it is. Timothy Olyphant plays Raylan Givens, a US Marshal who shoots a mobster in Miami and gets reassigned to Kentucky—his home, and a place he'd rather forget. Raylan is an old-school lawman in a modern world: he wears a cowboy hat, he draws fast, he speaks slowly. "I've been a marshal for twenty years," he says. "I never killed anyone I didn't have to."

The show's genius is its villains. Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) is Raylan's childhood friend turned criminal mastermind. They dug coal together. Now they're on opposite sides of the law, butthelines blur. Boyd's evolution—from white supremacist to Born-again Christian to crime lord—is the show's running tragedy. He wants a legitimate life. He can't escape his nature. Raylan wants tostop Boyd. He can't escape their bond.

Harlan County, Kentucky is the show's true setting—Appalachian poverty, coal mining, oxycontin, corruption, blood feuds. Each season introduces a new criminal enterprise: the Bennetts (a hillbilly mafia), Quarles (a Detroit gangster), the Crowders, Mexican cartels. The body count is high. The body count is funny. The show balances violence and humor with Elmore Leonard's voice—it's adapted from his stories, and his tone is everything: cool, laconic, surprising.

Six seasons, seventy-eight episodes, complete. The finale gives Raylan and Boyd a final confrontation that's both inevitable and surprising. "We dug coal together," Boyd says, explaining their bond. They did. Raylan leaves Harlan, Boyd goes to prison, and the show ends on a note of mutual respect between enemies who were once friends. Justified is the best Elmore Leonard adaptation ever made—funny, violent, morally complex, and deeply American.
