What It Feels Like to Watch

Jessica Jones is noir disguised as superhero television. Krysten Ritter plays Jessica, a private investigator with super strength and a drinking problem who runs Alias Investigations out of a shabby New York office. She's not trying to save the world. She's trying to pay rent and forget what Kilgrave (David Tennant) did to her.

Kilgrave is the show's great villain and its central trauma. He has the power to make anyone do anything he says—jump off buildings, kill themselves, smile while dying. He controlled Jessica for months, used her, discarded her when she escaped. Season one is about him coming back, wanting her again, and Jessica confronting a violation she can't prosecute because his power leaves no evidence.

David Tennant plays Kilgrave as charming, petty, and terrifying—abuse personified, a stalker who genuinely believes he loves his victim. The show understands that the horror isn't just what Kilgrave does, but how he justifies it. He's not a supervillain with grand plans. He's a man who's never been told no.

Krysten Ritter is extraordinary—cynical, wounded, furious, resilient. She drinks too much, pushes everyone away, and can't stop investigating because helping people is the only thing that makes her feel less broken. The supporting cast (Rachael Taylor as Trish, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri) builds a world where damaged women try to survive.

Season one is a complete, devastating story about consent and control. Later seasons couldn't match it—Kilgrave's shadow was too large. But that first season remains the best work Marvel Television ever produced.
