What It Feels Like to Watch

Hotel Del Luna is a Korean fantasy romance about a hotel for ghosts. Jang Man-wol (IU) is the owner—an immortal, bitter woman cursed to run the hotel for 1,000 years for sins in her past life. The hotel exists between worlds, serving ghosts who need to resolve unfinished business before moving on. Man-wol is stuck, drinking expensive champagne, wearing designer clothes, hating everyone.

Goo Chan-sung (Yeo Jin-goo) is the new hotel manager. His father made a deal with Man-wol years ago; now Chan-sung has to work for her. He's human, terrified of ghosts, and completely wrong for the job. But he's also kind, decent, and persistent. He starts helping Man-wol in ways she doesn't expect—checking on her, caring about her hotel, seeing the human beneath the immortality.

The hotel is gorgeous—filled with art, chandeliers, and ghosts in period costume. Each episode features a ghost with a story to resolve: a mother who died before seeing her child, a criminal who needs to confess, a lover who never said goodbye. Man-wol judges them, often cruelly, but Chan-sung's compassion shifts her perspective.

The romance is slow-burn—Man-wol has centuries of walls, and Chan-sung is too young and too mortal. But their connection builds naturally, complicated by Man-wol's past and the curse that binds her. The show balances humor (Man-wol's petty demands, the ghost staff's bickering), horror (some ghosts are genuinely terrifying), and genuine emotion.

IU is magnetic—petty, glamorous, damaged, and eventually vulnerable. The production design is lush, the romance earned, the mythology satisfying. It's fantasy done right: a complete story in 16 episodes.
