What It Feels Like to Watch

Hacks is about generational warfare in comedy, and the unexpected friendship that emerges from it. Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is a legendary stand-up comedian in Las Vegas, playing the same casino for decades, her material stuck in the past. Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) is a 25-year-old comedy writer who got cancelled for an insensitive tweet, unemployable in Los Angeles. Their agents pair them up—Ava needs work, Deborah needs new material.

Jean Smart is magnificent. Deborah Vance is bitter, ruthless, hilarious, and haunted by a career that could have been more—not bigger, but better. She chose money and comfort over artistic risk. Now she's facing irrelevance. Ava represents everything she hates: youth, entitlement, the new rules of comedy that make her old material problematic. But Ava also has talent, and Deborah needs fresh eyes on her act.

The show is a two-hander, and Hannah Einbinder matches Jean Smart beat for beat. Ava is privileged, judgmental, and secretly desperate to prove herself. She thinks she knows better than Deborah; she doesn't. She thinks her generation's comedy is superior; it isn't. She thinks cancel culture is unfair; she's also right that some jokes shouldn't be made.

The Vegas setting gives the show a unique texture—the casinos, the shows, the road comics passing through. Deborah's world is one the audience may not know, and it's a world worth visiting. The supporting cast includes Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Marcus, Deborah's COO who manages her empire and his own secrets.

Three seasons in, the show keeps finding new territory—the road tour, the special, the legacy. It's about what art costs, what compromise means, and whether you can ever be too old to matter.
