What It Feels Like to Watch

Fleabag is a comedy about grief, guilt, and the lies we tell to survive. Phoebe Waller-Bridge created, wrote, and stars as an unnamed woman—Fleabag—navigating life in London after her best friend's death. She's broke, her cafe is failing, her family is broken, and she has a lot of sex with a lot of wrong men. It sounds sad. It's hilarious.

The show's signature device is breaking the fourth wall: Fleabag talks to the camera constantly, commenting on the action, winking at the audience, telling us what she really thinks. It's a magic trick—we think we're seeing her true self, but we're not. We're seeing another performance, another mask. The real Fleabag is buried under the jokes and the men and the guilt.

Season one is about the secret she's keeping: she slept with her best friend's boyfriend. Season two is about redemption: she meets a priest (Andrew Scott) who sees through her in a way no one else does. The Hot Priest, as he's known, is the first person who can tell when she's lying—because he's lying too. Their relationship is impossible, electric, and ultimately the thing that forces her to face herself.

The supporting cast is perfect: Sian Clifford as Claire, Fleabag's uptight sister; Olivia Colman as their godmother, a masterpiece of passive aggression; Andrew Scott as the priest whose own faith is wavering. Every scene has multiple layers—comedy, tragedy, truth, pretense.

Twelve episodes. Two seasons. Complete. The final shot is Fleabag walking away from the camera, done with performing. We're not invited to follow. It's the perfect ending.
