What It Feels Like to Watch

Broadchurch is British crime drama as community portrait. A boy is murdered in a small coastal town; the investigation exposes everyone's secrets. Danny Latimer, age eleven, found dead at the foot of cliffs. Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant) is the outsider—grim, haunted, running from a failed case. Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) is the local—her son was Danny's best friend, her husband is the town's beloved fix-it man. Together, they peel back layers of lies. "Everyone's a suspect," Hardy says. He's right.

The mystery matters, but the community matters more. Each episode reveals another secret: an affair, a hidden past, financial crimes, sexual secrets. The town itself is a character—the cliffs, the beach, the small businesses, the gossip network. The murder tears wounds open. "We thought we lived in a safe place," someone says. They didn't. No place is safe when people have secrets. The performances are extraordinary: David Tennant's Hardy is damaged, difficult, brilliant. Olivia Colman's Miller is the emotional center—a woman whose trust in her community shatters.

Season one solves Danny's murder—the resolution is devastating, personal, earned. Season two deals with the aftermath: the trial, the defense, the doubt sown. Season three pivots to a new case—a sexual assault—while continuing the community's story. The show's thesis: crimes ripple. Everyone carries consequences. Hardy and Miller solve cases, but they can't fix what's broken. "You can't undo it," Miller says. "You just have to live with it."

Three seasons, twenty-four episodes, complete. Broadchurch is crime drama as literature—patient, character-driven, willing to let silence work. The British coastline cinematography is stunning: cliffs and sea and sky, beauty and death together. "The sea won't keep secrets," the tagline says. Neither does Broadchurch. It reveals everything, slowly, carefully, and with tremendous emotional impact.
