What It Feels Like to Watch

Boardwalk Empire is Prohibition-era America in all its corrupt, violent, glamorous excess. Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) is the treasurer of Atlantic City—officially. Unofficially, he runs the city: bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, and politics, all woven together. "We make money by making friends," Nucky says. "And we make friends by being generous." The series follows his empire from 1920 through the 1920s, as Prohibition creates a black market, and criminals become kings.

The show's thesis: power corrupts, but it also isolates. Nucky has everything—wealth, influence, a beautiful mistress—except genuine connection. His marriage to Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) is transactional. His relationship with his brother Eli (Shea Whigham) is competitive. His protégé Jimmy (Michael Pitt) becomes his enemy. "You can't be half a gangster," Jimmy tells him early. Nucky resists—until he can't. The tragedy is watching a man become what he pretended to be.

The supporting cast includes historical figures: Al Capone (Stephen Graham), Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza), Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), Meyer Lansky (Anatol Yusef). The show blends fact and fiction—Nucky is loosely based on Enoch L. Johnson, the real Atlantic City boss. The production design is extraordinary: period costumes, boardwalk recreation, Atlantic City as playground and battlefield. Martin Scorsese directed the pilot; he set the visual language—tracking shots through speakeasies, violence as ballet, moral compromise as entertainment.

Five seasons, fifty-six episodes, complete. Boardwalk Empire is HBO's successor to The Sopranos—slower, more historical, equally ruthless. Some found the pace too measured; the show rewards patience. The finale, "Eldorado," is perfect: Nucky alone, assassinated as a boy he tried to save watches. "You can't be half a gangster." He wasn't. He was whole, and it killed him.
