What It Feels Like to Watch

Bates Motel is a prequel to Psycho—the story of Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) before he became the killer from Alfred Hitchcock's film. It's an origin story: Norman as a teenager, moving with his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) to a coastal Oregon town, buying a motel, trying to start over. The twist: we already know how this ends. Norman will kill his mother, preserve her corpse, and become "Mother" himself. The show's question: how did this happen?

The answer is uncomfortable: Norma Bates is part of the problem. Vera Farmiga's performance is extraordinary—a mother who loves her son possessively, manipulates him constantly, and may have helped create the monster he becomes. The show resists simple villainization: Norma is damaged, abused, trying to protect her son in the only way she knows how. But her protection is suffocation. "You're the only one who matters," she tells him. "We're the same person." The boundary between mother and son erodes—intentionally on her part, tragically on his.

Freddie Highmore's Norman is the center: sweet, awkward, slowly unraveling. The show tracks his mental decline—blackouts, hallucinations, episodes where "Mother" takes over. But it also shows a teenager trying to be normal: friends, a girlfriend (Emma, played by Olivia Cooke), dreams of independence. Every attempt at normalcy is sabotaged by Norma's manipulation or secrets from their past. The supporting cast includes Dylan (Max Thieriot), Norman's half-brother, who represents the healthy family Norman can't access.

Five seasons, fifty episodes, complete. Bates Motel ends exactly where Psycho begins—Norman alone with "Mother," the motel operating, new guests arriving. The journey is the achievement: a horror prequel that succeeds by being a character study. Farmiga and Highmore are Emmy-worthy; their chemistry is the show's engine—love, codependency, mutual destruction. "We all go a little mad sometimes," Norman says in Psycho. Bates Motel shows us exactly how.
