What It Feels Like to Watch

Annika is Scottish crime drama with a twist. Detective Inspector Annika Strandhed (Nicola Walker) leads the Marine Homicide Unit in Glasgow—investigating deaths connected to the water. The twist: she speaks directly to us. Breaking the fourth wall constantly, Annika narrates her thoughts, references literature and mythology, and draws parallels between crimes and classic stories. Each episode opens with a literary reference—Herman Melville, Ibsen, Greek tragedy—connecting the case to something universal.

Nicola Walker is the draw. After starring in Unforgotten (one of Britain's best crime dramas), she brings her signature intelligence and emotional depth to Annika—lighter in tone but not in craft. Annika is brilliant, chaotic, struggling with a teenage daughter (Morgan, played by Silvie Furneaux) and a new team she hasn't earned yet. The team includes Tyrone (Ukweli Roach), Blair (Katie Leung), and Michael (Jamie Sives)—the boss she has complicated history with. "The sea never lies," Annika says. People do.

The show's thesis: crime is human. Each case reveals character—not just the killer's, but Annika's, the team's, the victims'. The marine setting provides unique cases: bodies in shipyards, deaths on boats, murders connected to fishing and trade. Glasgow's waterways—rivers, canals, the Clyde—are the backdrop. The show is Scottish noir with humor and heart. Annika's fourth-wall breaks could be gimmicky; Walker makes them intimate, like a friend confiding in you.

Two seasons, twelve episodes, ongoing. Annika is comfort crime—not brutal, not nihilistic, but intelligent and character-driven. The mysteries are clever, but the pleasure is watching Walker work. She's one of Britain's best actors, and this is her star vehicle. "We all have secrets," Annika tells us. "The question is which ones we drown in."
