What It Feels Like to Watch

Agent Carter is Marvel's secret weapon: a period piece spy thriller with a feminist edge. Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) was Captain America's love interest, his equal, and his widow—or so she thinks. It's 1946. The war is over. Men have returned. And Peggy, who fought with the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), is now a secretary, dismissed, invisible. "I know my value," she says. "Anyone else's opinion doesn't matter." She proves it.

The show's premise: Peggy works covertly for Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), Iron Man's father, who's been framed for selling weapons. With his butler Edwin Jarvis (James D'Arcy), she investigates, clears his name, and uncovers conspiracies that span the SSR itself. The gender dynamics are central: Peggy is constantly underestimated, dismissed, spoken over. She uses it. "I can work with that," she says. The show's thesis: competence trumps expectation—and Peggy is the most competent person in any room.

Hayley Atwell is magnetic: fierce, funny, British, unapologetically intelligent. Her chemistry with James D'Arcy's Jarvis is the show's heart—a partnership without romance, built on mutual respect. The supporting cast includes SSR agents who doubt her, enemies who underestimate her, and allies who recognize her worth. Season two moves to Los Angeles, adds science fiction elements (Zero Matter), and expands the scope while keeping Peggy central.

Two seasons, eighteen episodes, cancelled. Agent Carter deserved more—Atwell's performance, the period setting, the feminist themes, and the Marvel connections made it uniquely valuable. But what exists is excellent: spy thriller meets character study, period piece meets superhero universe. "I know your value," a character tells Peggy. "Do you?" She does. Now so do we.
